Run Away Track MVP?

Usain Bolt
Does a scenario exist that does not involve Usain Bolt as track and field’s most valuable athlete? The Jamaican star is running this time for the prestigious IAAF World Athlete of the Year Award to be named during the 2008 World Athletics Gala, which takes place in Monaco, on 23 November 2008.
How do you top three world records and three gold medals?
Bolt finished a magical season that saw him set the 100-meter world record on two occassions and the 200-meter world record fall at feet. Oh, and then there is the business of Bolt’s pivotal third leg on Jamaica’s world record setting 4×100-meter relay in Beijing.
Don’t forget about Dayron Robles of Cuba - he can’t be denied either. He rolled 12.87 over the 110-hurdles in Ostrava, Czech Republic on June 12, immediately establishing himself as the man to beat. Robles dizzing place delivered gold in Beijing.
Ethopia’s Kenenisa Bekele has taken distance running to another level. His gold medal performance in the 10,000-meters finals was a new Olympic Record (27:01.17) - bettering the time he ran in 2004.
Bekele let it rip over the final 400-meters, unleashing a lethal pace that competitors found too much to match, solidifying his place in history among the all-time greats.
Bolt’s career is far from finished. He has proven himself to be a brilliant performer and the next test of his young career is longevity. Meaning can he reign on top of the game for a decade, dominating a generation of sprinters - like Michael Johnson and Carl Lewis?

Instant Analysis - Asafa Powell Shows Up

-Stuttgart, Germany - It looked like another Jamaican track practice. Asafa Powell made overtures about breaking the 100-meter world record after running 9.87 in the rain of Gateshead, 9.72 in Lausanne and 9.82 in Brussels.
The chilly weather thwarted Powell’s run at the record but he had two impressive runs. He ran 9.77 to win his heat and, within an hour, 9.82 to win the final.

It was one year ago that he owned the world record. This year Usain Bolt is the 100-meter record holder and Asafa Powell ran 9.77 in the qualifying round and despite a poor start won the finals in 9.82. Another Jamaican, Michael Frater 9.98 ahead of Travis Padgett (10.10) of the U.S. was fifth place.
Nick Symmonds of the Oregon Track Club took sixth in the 800-meters in 1:45.33.Bernard Lagat was back to his winning ways. He covered the 1,500-meters in 3:32.75.
The Jamaicans took 1-2 in the women’s 100-meters. Olympic champ Shelly Ann-Fraser 11.06, and Kerron Stewart (11.11), Carmelita Jeter (11.12), and MeLisa Barber (11.21).

Bolt Strikes For Third Gold Medal in 400M Relay

-Beijing-The good times kept rolling on Friday for Usain Bolt and the Jamaican national team. Bolt ran a lightening fast third leg that helped to crush the World Record previously held by the United States. The U.S. had poor hand offs and did not make the final.
The Jamaica squad was made up of Nesta Carter, Michael Frater, Bolt and Asafa Powell. Jamaica recorded 37.10, which improved on the record of 37.40 set by the U.S. relay team at the 1992 Olympics.

For many of the sprinters, the first round of 100-meter heats, were a chance to shake off the rust. Many have not competed in at least two weeks and for Tyson Gay, it has been six weeks since he last ran at the U.S Olympic Trials.
The typical race strategy for champion racing is a combination of posturing and working on the different pieces of the race such as: the start and drive phase. Normally athletes do not like to show all of the stuff until the finals.
There were no major upsets in the morning, as The Big Three 100-meter runners easily made it through the first heat of the 100-meters rounds. Tyson Gay looked completely healed today as he was conserving energy and preparing for the next round ahead of him.
Times heated up a bit in the quarter-final heats that took place during the evening.
It appeared that Usain Bolt’s run of 9.92, was easy to him and that he burned very little energy. The world record holder maintains his status as the favorite to win gold, however history has shown that running the fastest times through the rounds is no guaranteed for victory in the finals. Veteran Darvis Patton (10.04) of the U.S. was second behind Bolt in that quarter-final heat.
Tyson Gay placed second in his heat (10.02), behind Former LSU runner Richard Thompson of Trinidad. In the final heat of the afternoon, Asafa Powell easily won in 10.02 seconds, followed closed by Walter Dix (10.08) of the U.S. placed.

Powell Is More Comfortable In the Shadows.
The day belonged to Asafa Powell (9.88) as he exacted revenge on Usain Bolt (9.89), the Jamaican countrymen who broke his 100-meter world record.
The press will have a field day with this latest turn of events. Powell won because he exploded out of the blocks in a near-perfect start and held on with a photo finish lean over Bolt.
The time marked the fastest run of the year for Powell and indicates that he runs best without any expectations or pressure. Going into the Olympics, Bolt is still as the favorite despite todays results.
Lolo Jones (12.64) is running with extreme confidence at this point in the season. Halfway through the 100 hurdles, she was in a fierce battle and closed the gap over the last hurdle to claim victory.
Dayron Robles (12.91) broke the stadium record in the 110-hurdles in his slim victory over David Oliver (13.04). Robles hit less hurdles and secured the victory.
For right now, the one lap race belongs to Sanya Richards. Richards (50.38) won today over Novlene Williams (50.85), and Allyson Felix (50.88) in a decent race.
Jeremy Wariner won a decisive victory in the 400-meter over Chris Brown of the Bahamas. Wariner’s race is coming together and today was preparation for Beijing.
