German Fernandez named USATF Athlete of the Week

NDIANAPOLIS - German Fernandez has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after placing 11th Saturday at the 37th IAAF World Cross Country Championships held at the Al Bisharat Golf Course in Amman, Jordan.
A two-time U.S. Junior Cross Country champion, Fernandez led Team USA with an 11th-place finish in the junior men’s 8 km, running 24 minutes 13 seconds. He was the first non-African across the line and helped lead the junior men’s team to a fifth place finish.
Now in its eighth year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
